Our Day
The Quarry Hill Day begins at 8:30 and ends at 3:00. The morning session ends before lunch at 12:00. The afternoon session begins at 12:00 and ends at 3:00.
Morning (8:30-12:00)
As children arrive, they put their things away in cubbies, determine their job at the job board, and then participate in free choice. They may participate in a variety of activities at project tables, play outside, or engage in group or individual play that may include books or puzzles, dressups and imaginary games, building with blocks or creating roads for cars. Activity at the Exploration Table or using art materials are also available.
Every child completes their job of the day and is offered a snack, after which they help put away the materials and toys we have used throughout the morning. The entire group then comes together for a circle time that may include a story, game, or group conversation, depending on the day. Adventuring and discoveries outdoors are also part of every morning. We come together again before lunch for a singing circle and to say goodbye to our friends who leave before lunch.
Lunch (12-12:30)
After our late morning circle and singing time, children wash hands, and sit at tables in small groups for lunch. Children are encouraged to unpack their own lunches, and to help each other if needed. Teachers are of course available to help with opening containers, peeling oranges, and any needed assistance. Weather permitting, we enjoy eating both snack and lunch outdoors.
Afternoon (12:30-3:00)
As children finish eating, they pack up their lunchboxes and put them away, brush their teeth, and come together for library time. Children may choose to look at books individually, in pairs, or in small, quiet groups. Teachers often introduce new books or read favorite stories to the whole group at this time. We also include a quiet rest time we call Growing Time when children listen to music, sleep, all taking time to recharge for the rest of the day. Every afternoon children are offered projects, a snack, and the opportunity to play outside. Children are picked up by 3:00.
